Poecilia wingei
Endler's livebearer is a small poeciliid from the Paria Peninsula region of Venezuela, closely related to the guppy but generally smaller with compact, often high-contrast wild-type colour patterns. Many aquarium lines are kept pure; hybridising freely with common guppies produces fertile offspring, so dedicated keepers often house them separately. Active and peaceful, they do well in planted nano and community tanks with other gentle species. Like guppies, they are livebearers and breed easily—dense vegetation helps fry survive.
Crushed flake or micro pellets; frozen cyclops, daphnia, or baby brine shrimp; particles must suit small mouths.
Frequency: 1–2× daily
Small, frequent feeds; variety supports colour; avoid overfeeding in nano tanks.
Native Region: Venezuela (northern drainages, e.g. Campoma region)
Warm, vegetated lagoons and streams; often clear, sunlit margins.
Planted tank with open water movement; keep six or more for confidence; prefer several females per male.
Activity Level: High
Schooling Size: 6+ recommended
Top- and mid-water activity; may hybridise with Poecilia reticulata if mixed—keep species-only for pure Endlers.
Difficulty: Easy
Type: Livebearer
Sexual Dimorphism: Males smaller, brightly patterned, with gonopodium; females larger, plainer, and rounder when gravid.
Females produce broods of fry; separate from common guppies if maintaining pure lines; floating plants improve fry survival.
Substrate: Either
Plant Safe: Yes
Fine with moss, stems, and floating plants; long-finned males need peaceful tankmates.
