Explore 3 Rainbowfish species in our database
Rainbowfish are active, colourful schooling fish best known for their metallic sheen and display behaviour. Popular aquarium species come mainly from Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, and many make striking additions to spacious planted community tanks.
Most rainbowfish are fast-moving social fish that do best in groups. They usually occupy the upper to middle levels of the aquarium, and males often intensify their colours when displaying to one another.
Provide plenty of swimming space, strong filtration, and a varied diet to bring out their best colour and condition. Most species should be kept in groups of 6 or more, but tank size and water preferences vary significantly between the smaller blue-eyes and larger rainbowfish species.
