Plecos are loricariid suckermouth catfish that range from small community species to very large aquarium fish. Many are valued for their unusual shapes, armour plating, and rasping mouthparts, but care requirements vary enormously by species.
Most plecos are bottom-oriented fish that spend much of their time attached to wood, rocks, or glass. Some species are peaceful and sociable, while others are territorial, especially toward similar-shaped fish.
Always check the exact species before purchase, as adult size, diet, and temperament vary widely. Many plecos need driftwood, shaded hiding places, good oxygenation, and species-appropriate foods; not all remain small and not all are reliable algae eaters.
