Killifish are a diverse group of small egg-laying fish admired for their intense colours and unusual breeding strategies. The hobby includes both short-lived annual species and longer-lived non-annual species, so care requirements vary widely.
Many killifish are surface-oriented fish, and some are best kept as pairs, trios, or species groups rather than in mixed community setups. Males may display strongly to one another, and many species are accomplished jumpers.
Use a tight-fitting lid, provide a calm well-furnished aquarium, and offer small live, frozen, or high-quality dry foods. Some killifish are suitable for peaceful communities, but many do best in species-focused setups and require careful attention to water chemistry and breeding method.
