Epalzeorhynchos frenatum
The rainbow shark is a deep-bodied cyprinid with a dark body and red fins, often sold as a “shark” for community tanks. Juveniles are relatively peaceful, but adults frequently claim the bottom—especially around driftwood and rock—and may harass similar-shaped fish or other bottom dwellers. One specimen per tank is usual unless the aquarium is very long and structured; provide broken sight lines and a sandy substrate.
Sinking pellets and granules; frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp; blanched vegetables; avoid overfeeding protein.
Frequency: 1–2× daily
Territorial feeding at bottom—spread food along length of tank.
Native Region: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Mekong basin)
Streams and flooded zones with rocky bottoms and moderate flow.
Long footprint; rock and wood structure; tight-fitting lid—strong jumpers.
Activity Level: High
Patrols bottom and mid-water; chases similar species; keep with robust, fast tankmates.
Difficulty: Difficult
Type: Egg scatterer
Sexual Dimorphism: Females fuller-bodied; subtle when young.
Spawning rarely achieved in aquaria; egg scatterer over fine substrate.
Substrate: Sand
Plant Safe: Yes
Territory around caves and wood ends; avoid cramped tall tanks.
