Barbs are active freshwater fish popular in home aquariums for their movement, colour, and variety. In the hobby, this group includes many cyprinid species ranging from peaceful community fish to more boisterous types such as the Tiger Barb.
Most barbs are social, energetic fish that do best in groups of their own kind. They are usually active midwater swimmers, and larger group sizes often help spread out chasing and aggression in more boisterous species.
Keep barbs in groups, provide plenty of open swimming space, and feed a varied diet of quality dry, frozen, and live foods. Many species do well in community aquariums, but some are prone to fin nipping or rough behaviour, so compatibility should always be checked at species level.
